Maybe it was about two three years every time I visited 42nd Street Oyster bar was a mere stop on my bar crawl. You know when you hit one spot, look at each other and decide, eh, guess we’ll move on now. Those neon lights would catch our attention and next thing I knew I’m belly up to the bar fully immersed in “GET MY PARTY ON “ the sequel. The bar and tables are usually lined with office people retired from meat markets but still wanting get their flirt on. By late evening the crowd has separated into their little flirtdoms but eyes are still a’roamin.
So, one early evening Shell, my road dog…(she hates that term) suggested ole Forty Two for dinner. I was like, “Uh, yeah, sure. I guess all that space ain’t just for partying.” Up till then the dinner area could have been wallpaper, I paid it no mind. Any serious partier knows a lion cannot be distracted by the monkeys in the trees when hunting for gazelle. Holla!
Ya feel me?!…Anywho…
So we were greeted by a big smile who seated us. I thought, genuine appreciation in the guests. That’s a plus. We listened to the specials, browsed the menus, and basked in the ambiance. After rebuffing Shell’s suggestions for what I should order with, “Look. I’m not going to order your second choice here.” “Second choice? What’s that?” she replied. “You know you want more than one thing so I order your second choice and you’re all up on my plate.” “Nuh, uh.” “Uh hunh” we quipped.
I’ve heard tales about the quality of their seafood dishes so I certainly wasn’t going to order chicken or a burger. I even resisted my standard, Salmon. I usually like mine well cooked with lemon, rice pilaf, vegetable medley and a Long Island. Already pleased with the service I allowed my taste buds to swoon with anticipation for my order. So when the roasted Roma tomato crème penne arrived I was like all Barry White, “Ah yeah baby Darling. Please don’t make me wait too long. I wanna love you, baby. Can’t you see it’s only you I want. And you I need? Or something like that. The first sensation was when a fragrant whisp of seasoning tickled my senses. Then a tad larger engagement as I breathed a gentle huff in. And then, total immersion as a took a mouthful. The texture was perfect, seasoning masterful and presentation delightful. Oh and Shell. She had been going on about something. Her break in conversation caught my attention. I glanced up and caught her look of amusement as she asked, “Want some privacy.”
Who’da thunk they’d wrap this uber cool restaurant around one of my hangouts.
